Student funding

The University of Birmingham supports student mobility among its Universitas 21 (U21) partners by providing funding to successful applicants.

We provide funding in three ways:

PhD scholarships

In conjunction with the Graduate School, the University offers a number of scholarships each year to assist our PhD students in travelling to our U21 partners.

Each scholarship pays up to £1,500 to assist a student with travelling and accommodation costs and a visit might usually be for a period of approximately one month. For a full list of U21 institutions please visit the U21 page.

Travel bursaries

One of the most visible ways in which the U21 network is operating is the already substantial flow of students between U21 partner institutions. The U21 exchange programme offers students an unrivalled opportunity to spend up to a year at a world-class university in a range of exciting locations.

Exchange and Erasmus students going to U21 institutions can apply for a £1,000 bursary. There are eight bursaries available this academic year. Students that are eligible will contacted directly by the International Relations Office and provided with an application form.

The University of Birmingham currently has active exchange links with most of the U21 network.

University of Birmingham students

Opportunities currently exist for Birmingham students to study at a U21 institution through the following departments:

  • Commerce
  • American & Canadian Studies
  • Engineering
  • Earth Sciences

Any Birmingham department wishing to discuss introducing the U21 student exchange scheme should contact the Study Abroad Office at studyabroad@bham.ac.uk.

U21 partner students

Birmingham will consider exchange applications into the majority of its departments. Students interested in applying through this scheme should contact their own Study Abroad /Exchanges coordinator in the first instance to find out about their eligibility. More information for incoming international exchange students can be found on the incoming study abroad student web pages.

Summer School Bursaries

We currently offer a number of bursaries to support student participation in summer schools run by U21 partners. For 2012 there is one bursary available for each of the following Summer Schools:

  • Fudan University (Shanghai):  International Summer Session, 2nd June to 7th July 2012
  • Korea University International Summer Campus (ISC), 2nd July to 9th August 2012
  • National University of Singapore South East Asia in Context Summer School, 16th June – 20th July 2012

Each bursary is to assist a student with travelling and subsistence costs and the University will also cover any course fees. These bursaries are open to first or second year undergraduate students and third year undergraduate Masters students’ who have an upper second class average in their studies to date. Successful applicants will be required to complete the application process both for the University of Birmingham and the university organising the summer school.
