Preparing to go abroad?

Before you go abroad we offer a range of events and services to help you get the most out of your year.

Online Application

How to apply:

All students must apply for their international exchange placement online before 7th December 2011.

All students must apply for their Erasmus exchange placement online before 31st March 2012.

To help you complete the form, please use our frequently asked questions.

Students may choose 3 possible host institutions in order of preference for each country they will be going to OR enter the host institution if the student has already been allocated a place at a  host institution by the department. A copy of the completed application form must be printed by the student and given to the department exchange tutor. 

Note: The exchange tutor will inform the student of the placement directly.

All International Exchange, combined exchange and Erasmus exchange students where requested to do so by your exchange tutors, should submit the documents listed below together with the application form:

  • Personal Statement (100 words detailing what you hope to achieve from your year abroad and why you should be selected for your chosen destination)
  • An academic reference

These documents should then be handed to your exchange tutor for checking and signing. To find out who the relevant exchange tutor is, please view the list of tutors.

Please note:

All students should check with their exchanges tutor what the application procedure is, what forms they must complete and adhere to the application deadline set by the department.

Exchanges Fair

Students preparing to go abroad are strongly recommended to visit the Exchanges Fair held every November. This is a great opportunity to ask questions to returned and incoming exchange students and also partner universities and other relevant organisations that have stands at the fair.

Pre-departure briefings

Pre-departure briefings by country are organised by the Study Abroad and Exchanges Office in March. These are compulsory and you must attend at the date and time given.

Forms

The relevant forms required by the Study Abroad and Exchanges Office can be downloaded here. If you have problems completing any of these or you are unsure which forms to complete, please first check the information in your student handbook and then if you are still having problems please contact us at studyabroad@bham.ac.uk.

All students must also complete the registration form for University travel insurance. This is free for all students but you MUST complete the form on the travel insurance website in order to be covered.
