Study Abroad Programme (without English)

The University of Birmingham has a long-standing reputation for attracting high quality students from across the world, particularly from the United States and Asia. The Study Abroad Programme (without English) offers native speakers of English from any country outside of Europe the opportunity to study at Birmingham for either year or part year in the subjects of their choice.

• Native speaker of English or English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5
• Completed first 2 years of university degree programme
• Achieved a grade point average of at least 3.0
• Demonstrate a particular interest or background in subject of choice

How to apply

• A statement explaining why you wish to participate in the programme
• A recent official academic transcript
• Two references (at least one must be an academic reference)

Study Abroad Programme (with English)

Our Study Abroad Programme (with English) is designed to be flexible and meet the needs of students from any country outside of Europe whether they speak English as a first or second language. If you need to improve your level of English you can start the Study Abroad Programme in April or July taking up to six months of intensive language training before you commence your academic studies.

Course structure

Part one: April – June
English language courses focusing on the development of your English language skills. You will work on basic skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Part two: July – September
English language courses leading into studying English for academic purposes. You will develop study skills such as note-taking, understanding lectures, writing essays and reports in addition to developing your ability to communicate in social settings by studying aspects of idiomatic English. Lectures, seminars and cultural visits will also give you an insight into traditional and contemporary British culture.

Part three: October – December, and part four: December – March
Academic courses of your choice – these will be based in the academic department of your choice where you will join with other ordinary degree students and follow the traditional study system of lectures and classes supplemented by individual study. You will also be able to benefit from additional English language classes during this time if you require them.

• Completed first 2 years of university degree programme
• Taken courses in academic areas relevant to the subject you would like to study at Birmingham
• An IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent (to enter part one in April)
• An IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent (to enter part two in July)

The best time to apply is during the start of the academic year before the year you plan to come to Birmingham.

Students can also choose to apply for a full academic year at Birmingham in addition to the English Language course. The academic year ends in June. Fees for this can be provided on request from the Study Abroad Office.

Please note that fee discounts cannot be negotiated for students who leave the programme in the middle of a University of Birmingham teaching term.
