Teaching exchange

Information for staff involved in teaching exchanges.

Teaching assignments

Teaching staff mobility can be undertaken:

  1. To an HEI which holds a standard EUC and with which a valid Inter-institutional Agreement is in place
  2. By staff of an enterprise invited to an HEI to undertake teaching activities. In these cases the mobility is managed by the HEI

The selection of teachers to undertake teaching assignments should be based on a short "Teaching programme" submitted by the teacher and which has been endorsed by both sending and receiving institutions. The essential elements of this should be: objectives and added value of the mobility, content of the teaching programme, expected results.

To ensure that the greatest possible number of teachers have access to these opportunties, priority should be given to teachers going abroad for the first time.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible, teaching staff must be:

  • Employed by an HEI holding an EUC or employed by an eligible enterprise
  • A national of a participating country or recognised by their country of residence as a refugee, stateless person or permanent resident

Teachers involved in Erasmus Mundus (EM) Master Courses

Erasmus eligible teachers are entitled to Erasmus Mobility teaching grants for teaching assignments in EM Master Courses according to standard Erasmus rules.

Eligible teachers are entitled to Erasmus Mobility teaching grants for teaching assignments in EM Master Courses according to standard Erasmus rules.

Duration of teaching period

There is an obligation to deliver at least 5 hours of teaching (ie, at least one day). A minimum duration of 5 days is strongly recommended to provide a meaningful contribution to the teaching programme and international academic life at the host institution. Shorter periods should be exceptional. The maximum duration is 6 weeks.

Staff mobility grants

Mobility grants for staff are provided as contributions towards subsistence and travel and are calculated on the basis of receipted expenditure.

The following table shows the maximum subsistence rates that can be paid :

Country band Daily Week 1 Week 2 Additional weeks
Band A
Bulgaria, Romania
90 450 225 113
Band B
Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey

The maximum travel grant is €450.

A week, for these purposes, is considered to be five working days. Weekends or holidays falling in the period of the stay abroad are not considered for support, unless they are used as working or travel days. In such cases the teaching programme should demonstrate that teaching activities have been undertaken for the period reported.

All payments, for both travel and subsistence, will be made on the basis of receipted expenditure and may be subject to audit.

Agreements with beneficiaries

You must ensure that each teacher has formally accepted the grant, together with all obligations attaching to its acceptance, before the grant is transferred to the teacher. Financial commitments must be specified by the appropriate means. The teacher will be bound by the agreed "Teaching programme" submitted for the mobility period, approved and signed by the parties involved.

Teaching report

Upon return from the teaching period, the teacher shall provide a short report with the main results.

Confirmation of teaching period

At the end of each teaching period abroad the host institution should provide confirmation of the duration of stay.
